Parco nazionale della Maiella

Rugged and majestic on its western slopes, a refuge for hermits and shepherds in its wild eastern valleys, the Parco Nazionale della Maiella is defined by peaks over 2,000 metres, high-altitude pastures, hermitages, and sacred sites. It is also one of Europe’s most important biodiversity hotspots.

Covering 74,095 hectares across 39 municipalities in the provinces of L’Aquila, Chieti, and Pescara, the park protects both nature and human heritage. Evidence of this rich past can be found in shepherds’ and brigands’ inscriptions in caves, scattered tholos huts, prehistoric sites dating back to the Paleolithic, and remarkable archaeological locations.

Established in 1995 and recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2021, the park’s slopes are covered with beech forests and ridges home to the rare dwarf mountain pine. Its vegetation includes over 2,100 plant species, many of them endemic. Wildlife thrives here, including the Apennine wolf, Marsican brown bear, Abruzzo chamois, otters, roe deer, red deer, and about 130 bird species, among them the majestic golden eagle.
